In a scheme being piloted in Greater Manchester, the Police are using two Smart cars fitted with telescopic cameras to photograph what drivers are doing inside their cars.
There is a £30 fine for those caught without a seatbelt or driving erratically whilst distracted by things such as eating, applying make-up or using the radio. The fine for those drivers caught on camera using their phones is £60 plus three penalty points. If you don't accept the fine you will have to appear in Court.
In the last two years, distracted drivers have been involved in over 400 accidents across Greater Manchester, and 25 people have been killed or seriously injured. Police say this initative, using cars similar to those used by Google, will help reduce accidents and road deaths. However, the Association of British Drivers said: "This is a total infringement."
