In an unusual case, a cyclist who hit a boy at traffic lights, knocking him to the ground, has been prosecuted for careless cycling. It was estimated that he was cycling at 15mph.
The cyclist, who admitted cycling too fast, overtaking stationary traffic at the traffic lights and running into a boy, was granted a conditional discharge and ordered to pay costs and compensation.
The cyclist said outside court that the area where the accident happened is a dangerous area for cyclists. He said: "My problem was that I stopped and helped. If I had carried on nothing would have happened. I am quite upset about the whole thing. I have a criminal record now. If I have to apply for a job, I would have to declare it. I think it is very unfair."
Superintendent Mick Doyle, the head of roads policing for Thames Valley Police, said: "Cyclists are often vulnerable but they are also capable of causing harm to others. This case has shown the importance of cycling safely and the need to obey the rules of the road."
