Photocard licences automatically expire after 10 years and have to be renewed. However, this fact hasn’t been publicised and it is thought that many drivers think that the photocard licence is valid for life like the paper licences. It costs just £17.50 to renew a photocard licence, but the fine for driving without a valid licence is £1,000.
The date that the licence is valid to is printed on the front of the card next to number 4b.
The DVLA can not say if drivers were told when they received their licence that it would need renewing, and reminders are being sent out to people whose photocard is due to expire.
