Roadworks on the M6 near Carlisle have reduced the speed limit to 50mph, and a speed camera in the area has captured more than 5,500 motorists speeding in just five weeks.
This means with each driver paying a minimum of £60 fine, the camera will be set to bring in fines of more than £0.5million in the two months that the temporary limit is in place, this equates to £3million a year, making it a record breaking camera.
Claire Armstrong of Safespeed said: "This is absolutely disgusting. This puts all the others in the shade. The cameras on the M11, which are questionable, were raising around £1million a year but this one would substantially beat that. This has nothing to do with road safety and everything to do with raising money."
