Jan Woodward's teenage daughter, Kelly, was killed by a drink driver in a collision in 2006. Kelly accepted a lift home from a party and was sat in the rear seat when the car hit a tree. Since then Jan has fought for a change in the law that would ensure that driving bans only start once the motorist has served their prison sentence.
She launched an online petition, which she presented to Downing Street with more than 14,000 names on, and she has now received confirmation that her campaign has been successful.
Jan says: "The law change means that drivers who are jailed will not start their ban until they are released from prison, which is a great result. Another aspect of the law change means a person serving a ban will have it suspended if he or she is imprisoned for another offence, meaning none of the ban can be served while in custody."
