In an attempt to reduce carbon emissions and also save the Highways Agency millions in electricity costs, lighting on stretches of motorway will be turned off late at night.
The first two stretches, between junctions 21 and 22 on the M4 and 29 and 30 on the M5, have been chosen due to their low crash rates and low volumes of late night traffic.
Twenty years ago it was calculated that lighting on the motorway reduced crashes by 30%. However, that figure has now been recalculated, and it is now thought lighting cuts crashes by just 10%.
The lights will be switched of late at night on other motorways later this year. The Highways Agency has also not discounted turning off lights on some A-roads.
