The Motor Insurers' Bureau compensates people who were involved in accidents with uninsured drivers. Their research has found that over 1.7million people drove without insurance in 2008, with the largest number of drivers without cover being found in Greater London (13%), Merseyside (12%) and Greater Manchester (10%).
The MIB is launching a campaign to warn drivers not to reduce motoring costs by letting their insurance cover lapse, and that driving without insurance incurs a £200 fine, minimum of six penalty points and the vehicle could be seized.
The use of automatic number plate recognition technology, means 500 uninsured vehicles are seized every day. Ashton West, the Chief Executive of the MIB said: "There is no doubt that the numbers of drivers caught each year is increasing significantly, so drivers simply cannot afford to be complacent."
Philip Gomm, of the RAC Foundation, said that the situation seemed to be out of hand and had been for a long time "But insurance is not an option. You have to have it if you take a vehicle on to the road."
Research by moneysupermarket.com has found that 62% of the people surveyed think that drivers caught without insurance should face harsher penalties.
