Thousands of people have complained and now the Government is devising new rules that wheel clamping companies and car parks will have to adhere to.
In an attempt to force rogue clampers out of business, there will be new limits on the penalties and fees that they can charge and a new duty to act "reasonably" at all times. This will mean that the companies will have to display prominent signs, which set out the rules for parking on that area. They will have to release vehicles that have been clamped quickly, and have an appeals procedure in place.
It is anticipated that these new rules will be based on the code of practice set out by the British Parking Association. This code states that the maximum fee for clamping is £125, £250 for removal and £35 a day for storage. The code also sets out that the clamping fee and the removal fee can't both be charged if the vehicle is removed within three hours of clamping.
