Under proposals for improving road safety laws, by the Department of Transport, novice drivers could face a ban after just one speeding offence. Also, more experienced motorists could also be disqualified after just two offences, if the number of points issued with a fixed penalty becomes six points.
The proposal suggests increasing the number of points issued for exceeding the speed limit by more than 15 or 20mph (the exact figure as yet to be decided), from three to six points. As motorists who have been driving for less than two years can accrue only six points before they face a ban, this means that they face disqualification after just one offence.
Though the proposal looks at increasing the number of points imposed, the fine will remain at £60.
As nearly 66% of all road deaths occur on rural roads, the Department of Transport also advocates an increase in the number of speed cameras that detect average speed being placed on rural roads.
