Passengers Also Face Driving Prosecutions

A driver and her passenger have both been convicted of causing death by dangerous driving after the car they were in hit a couple walking away from their broken down car and killed them.

The driver, Mary Butres, was driving in excess of 110mph in heavy rain, after a day at the races drinking wine.  Her partner, John Nichols, was convicted of the same offence after the court found that he was partly to blame for the deaths, as he was aware Butres was driving too fast and had been drinking, and he could and should of prevented the accident.

The Telegraph reports that "legal experts said that there had been a previous case of a man being found guilty of a similar offence in Shrewsbury in 2005 but the conviction was later overturned on appeal."
