There are plans for technology to be installed in police stations that will test drivers for illegal substances, including cocaine and ecstasy, and would be mean police officers would no longer have to wait ask a doctor to take a blood test. This follows a review by Sir Peter North, that concluded that drug-driving was "out of all proportion" to the official figures.
Mike Penning, the road safety minister, says that the technology will start to be installed within months and it is hoped that every police station will have one of these machines within two years. Ultimately police officers will use them at the roadside.
A survey in 2009 found that 10% of drivers aged between 18-29 admitted driving after taking illegal drugs.
