In 2008, Government statistics show that 28,567 people were killed or seriously injured, which is 7% fewer than in 2007. It is also the lowest annual total since records started in 1926.
This is despite many A-roads failing to receive a safe rating in a European survey, in fact 58% of A-roads were found to be either neutral or poor.
Whilst these new figures show that the Government has hit their target of a 40% reduction in the number of people killed or seriously injured, the Transport Secretary, Lord Adonis said:
"While this news is encouraging, seven people are still dying on the roads every day and we will continue to do everything we can to prevent these tragedies."
