The national speed limit is to be reduced to 50mph on many of Britain's rural roads, and it will be enforced by average speed cameras. Cameras have already been installed in over 40 places and it is expected that later this year the Home Office will approve more widespread use. The speed restriction will apply to single carriageway A B and C roads.
A considerable number of the fatalities from car crashes occur on rural roads. Research by the Department of Transport has found reducing the limit could save 200-250 lives a year. This speed reduction may come into force as early as next year in response to Britain's roads no longer being the safest in the world.
