Using a request under the Freedom of Information Act, the Conservative MP Mark Field has information that shows that the number of speeding prosecutions and fines has increased sevenfold in ten years.
He told BBC2's Daily Politics that cameras were "more about money raising than safety on roads." He went on to say that despite the government raising considerable amounts of money through fines, the number of traffic police on duty has fallen by a fifth.
However, Brake, the road safety charity, says cameras help catch drivers who endanger lives. Jane Whitham, Brake's spokeswoman, said "speed cameras are an important tool in catching drivers who insist on breaking the law and putting lives in danger."
Geoff Hoon, the Transport Secretary, recently suggested that fixed point speed cameras may be replaced by those which measure the average speed, as they encourage safer driving and reduce fuel consumption.
