Lincolnshire Police has stopped a 83ft (25.25m) long lorry being driven on the road, as they claim its length makes it unlawful. However, the company that owns it, Derby Transport, claims that it is compliant with all regulations. The police stopped it just outside the haulage yard, but due to its length the vehicle was unable to reverse back into the yard and had to be escorted a mile down the road to the nearest roundabout so it could turn around.Derby Transport say that the vehicle would be ideal for transporting light weight goods, such as toilet rolls and cereal, as conventional lorries are filled up before they reach the weight limit. The superlorry would still have to adhere to the same weigh restriction of 44 tonnes.
Dick Denby, from the company, said: "We're trying to clarify and test the law - we're not trying to flout it. If the law decides that they are illegal we'll pull it off the roads. If the law decides that they are quite legal, everyone who wants one can have one."
