Unnecessary Speed Camera Laws

Lawyer Nick Freeman, aka "Mr Loophole", has described the new legislation - which will mean motorists convicted of failing to identify the driver of a speeding vehicle getting six penalty points on their licence - as both "unfair and oppressive".

Mr Freeman, whose celebrity clients include Jeremy Clarkson, Wayne Rooney and David Beckham, said: “I have great reservations about this law.

“There are numerous cases where people genuinely don’t know who was driving at the time an alleged offence is said to have been committed. They will now feel pressurised to provide a name in order to avoid being prosecuted for failing to furnish (naming the driver).

He added: “Awarding six points is too rigid. In my view a much fairer approach would be to award the same number of penalty points that would be liable to be received for the substantive offence as for the offence of failing to furnish.

“This would remove the current incentive that currently exists where people do know who was driving and willfully refuse to say. In turn this would address the Government’s concerns.”
